Local Talk 5 ½ Years Later Compilation

It really feels like we’ve been around way longer than 5 ½ years with Local Talk but it’s really true what they say, time flies when you’re having fun! What started as a somewhat simple and almost primitive urge to create a small house imprint has now grown into a much bigger affair. We really tried hard to keep the label from getting stuck in any genre (remember 90s house?) and to always keep Local Talk relevant, curious, diverse and with a healthy dose of underground mentality.

From our very first release with Bassfort’s excellent “Moon Shadow” in the summer of 2011 we had a crystal clear vision of what Local Talk should represent…house music in any way, shape or form! Over the years we released soulful, disco, jack, afro, vocal, deep, jazz, tech, latin, old school, acid, UK, Berlin, New Jersey, Detroit and of course Chicago inspired house music. If it made us bump…we put it out!

This brings us to today and about 80+ releases later. We thought about how we could best sum up these first 5 ½ years and immediately the image of Blaze’s classic album “25 Years Later” popped up. Besides the fact that it’s an amazing album cover it is also a good representation of when different musical genres fuse together. It’s not strictly a house album but just as well a r&b, reggae and soul album. This fusion and variation of house sounds is something that we’ve tried to capture on our “5 ½ Years Later” compilation. You’ll find a dark bass-line driven house jam from Art Of Tones (check the mad sax!), a proper deep journey jam from NYC’s DJ Spinna, a Blaze homage with that classic New Jersey sound from Sean McCabe, a bumpy world/jazz inspired cut straight outta Brescia from wonder kid Corrado Bucci, a high energy disco rub from Parisian S3A, a truly deep and soulful vocal jam from Boddhi Satva & Sly Johnson, a deep UK garage production from SMBD (aka Simbad), a dark and electronic affair from Toto Chiavetta (Yoruba) and finally, a musical acid number with that magical Bristol touch from newcomer Marcel Lune. As a digital bonus you’ll also find a killer track from up and coming Paris producer Hugo LX…just a straight house cut but with the ever so important bump!

All in all we think we’ve got most angles covered and hopefully this album will make you spread that chalk on the dance floor get down…Local Talk style!

Vinyl Factory – Crate Diggers w/DJ Amir

Written by Anton Spice | Published November 29, 2016

http://thevinylfactory.com/vinyl-factory-releases/crate-diggers-amir-abdullah/

Our Crate Diggers series profiles record collectors around the world. This time, we head to Brooklyn to drop in on veteran collector, DJ and compiler Amir Abdullah.

One of the world’s foremost crate diggers, Amir Abdullah may not be a household name, but with 30 years collecting and numerous game-changing compilations behind him, there are few people out there as fitting for this feature as him.

Last time we caught up with Amir, it was to talk Detroit and the vast untapped well of Strata Records music he’s now the custodian of. Now fresh from completing his first solo comp (away from sidekick Kon) charting the Latin influence in NYC, we caught up with him again to get an insight into the mind of at true digger.

Every collector’s nightmare, we began with Amir dealing with a water leakage that had displaced a large part of his collection.

Lefto: In Transit

Lefto: In Transit is a five-part documentary series with Belgian DJ Lefto, following him across the globe as he presents five different cities through the medium he knows best: underground music. “I’m just a man like you” Lefto says in the teaser, smirking at the camera. We think this series may prove otherwise.

DJ Lefto — his name is known and his music is loved across the globe.  But what brought him from a guy working at a Belgian record shop o an international tastemaker, sustaining widespread success over the years?  The thing that brought him into a record shop in the first place: a passion for music.

“He’s five people in one, like a child; like he’s 16 all the time,” British DJ Gilles Peterson gushes.  ”He’s a progressive DJ and there’s very few of those.”

Caviar Brussels director Kurt De Leijer has taken notice of that passion and is directing a five-part documentary series on Lefto, “In Transit” hitting Belgian television Spring 2017.  The series was selected for the 2016 Gent International Film Festival in October.

WeTalkMusic Episode #4: Kon & Ben Westbeech

WeTransfer’s podcast series resumes for another episode of detailed discussion about the musical inspiration and influences of two select artists. Installment four invites the malleable Ben Westbeech aka Breach and disco edit king, Kon for a chat behind the microphone with host Thris Tian.

Recorded in Westbeech’s hometown of Amsterdam, the long-time friends touch upon a collaborative album in the works before moving on to a few chosen tracks in response to a weaving narrative covering a number of themes.

We learn about the art and philosophy of tag names as Kon reflects on his days as a graffiti artist and b-boy, his early love for hip hop and the roots of his journey to the current day. Westbeech explains the “car test” which is the apex of approvals for any new production, and is also found out for being a “legit” scratch battle DJ.

Peppered with music from Rasa, Snoop Dogg, New Edition and Tom Trago, as always WeTalkMusic will provide an absorbing listen during some well deserved downtime.

DJ Amir presents Buena Música Y Cultura

A highly respected crate digger, DJ extraordinaire, record label go-to-guy and one half of dynamite duo Kon & Amir, BBE Records proudly presents this very special collection of music chosen by Amir. Having dedicated his life to mapping hip hop and dance music’s lineage, the Boston native has been called upon by Capitol Records, Pete Rock and Shady Records among others for his musical expertise over the years, not to mention having curated quite an incredible catalogue of compilations for BBE. Put simply, this guy has an almost unrivalled ear for a great record.

As you may well have guessed from the title, this latest outing has a distinctly latin flavour. Comprising a selection of obscure tracks from the 60′s and 70′s recorded mainly in New York (but featuring artists from Detroit and the Dominican Republic), there are bound to be new discoveries here for even the most ardent collector. Ranging styles are on display here, but the record has a definite leaning toward upbeat Salsa & Guaguancó. Latin superstars such as Joey Pastrana and Louie Colon may have been household names among the tenements of East Harlem & The Bronx back in the day, but they have never reached a mainstream audience outside the Latin community. Now thanks to Amir’s relentless digging, some of the finest and most authentic Latin dance music can be enjoyed on one fiery-hot record.

Vibin’ EP – Simbad & Lemy Leopard

The electricity radiated throughout the room as the lights began to flash euphorically. The walls shook, the ground clattering under the weight of a thousand marching feet. There was a synchronised energy in this place, a cosmic energy. The world was moving onward and upwards, against the worrisome tide of oppression which had held them down for far longer than it should ever have.

City Fly remain at the forefront of all things house as they continue to push forward UK club culture. Their latest release sees a collaboration from Lemy Leopard and Simbad who deliver three tracks for their Vibin‘ EP.

Josh Milan on Boiler Room TV – June 2016

Josh Milan, opened the inauguration of the Boiler Room’s new studio space in New York and helped them to celebrate with dance-inducing tunes.  The session took place alongside Louie Vega & Anane Vega.

Daymé Arocena – One Takes EP (Produced by Simbad)

The One Takes EP finds Daymé Arocena bouncing around ideas with label boss Gilles Peterson to put her unique spin on five different covers. Re-imagining cuts ranging from Italian obscurities to US house heroes, the sessions (as you might guess from the title) were about taking down whichever ideas came first. Working in a tradition of covers that’s long been ingrained in jazz as well as Latin music, One Takes finds them taking that approach and running with it.

Produced by longtime Brownswood familia Simbad, it’s a perfect vehicle for Daymé to bridge musical worlds in a way that’s always come naturally. With an upbringing split between classical training, early jazz greats like Billie Holiday and the spiritual and musical foundations of the Santería religion, she’s grown up seeing the bigger picture.

Daymé’s versatility meant he could throw dancefloor shakers at her – like Peven Everett’s ‘Stuck’ – along with super-rare cuts like Rafaella Renzulli’s ‘Asking Eyes’, which he witnessed Patrick Forge deploy to maximum effect on the dancefloor at last year’s Dingwalls reunion.

‘Gods Of Yoruba’, meanwhile, is a Horace Silver composition and ‘El 456′ is a Los Britos track which Gilles says “has always been a bit of a joker card for me at gigs”. ‘African Sunshine’, finally, is by Sun R Arkestra initiate Eddie Gale. The finished EP is almost as much a tour through interesting corners of Peterson’s record collection as it is through Daymé’s range as a performer.

Digital album & CD include bonus track ‘Muy cerquita de ti (Close to You)’.

Interview: Lefto, Belgium’s Hip Hop Stalwart

The renowned DJ talks about his radio career – and the doors that it’s opened.

DJs who aren’t also recording artists are a rare thing these days. A lot of them can be found in the UK – Kutmah, Oneman, Gilles Peterson – though the old continent can also lay claim to a few, including Belgium’s own Lefto, the public voice of hip hop in the country since 1999. For the past decade plus, Lefto has helmed a weekly radio show on Studio Brussels, the leading alternative national station in the country, set up and funded by the Flemish government. Originally called The Hop, and now simply known as the Lefto Show, the weekly broadcast has played a huge part in turning a hip hop enthusiast from the capital into an international representative for his country.

In addition to the show, Lefto holds a yearly stage at the Dour Festival, promotes regular parties around the country and travels the world. An early supporter of many of the names who have since gone on to become legends in the modern hip hop world, from Spinna to Jay Dee to Flying Lotus, Lefto is a DJ’s DJ and someone who commands the ears and respect of the likes of Renaat from R&S and Gilles Peterson.

I met up with Lefto in an old poets café in the historical heart of Brussels to look back on 15 years of national radio and his record shop days.

Lefto: Les Archives Du Rap

On October 9, 2015 Lefto compiled a trio of selections from the Universal catalogue entitled Les Archives Du Rap.

“I have designed this series to highlight the pearls of all eras of the Universal catalogue. I used a lot of b-sides and personal favorites. This compilation allows you to relive the whole history of rap since 1980.  Of course, some names are very well known — these are the artists who have built the foundations of the genre for the generation of today, but you may have forgotten other titles and I hope that the look of this series in three volumes will refresh your memory. ” Lefto

Compost 20 Years Interview With Rainer Trueby

Compost 20 Years Interview With Rainer Trueby

image

This year Compost Records celebrates 20 years of releasing music! This is a massive achievement for any label, especially for one that releases such a diverse range of music. Someone who’s been there since the beginning is Freiburg based DJ, producer and wine aficionado Rainer Trueby. He’s contributed tracks, remixes and compilations to the label (and sub-labels) from the very first days until now. Trueby has been running his own Root Down parties since the mid 90s and is known to have one of the most enviable record collections in the world for anyone with more than a passing interest in jazz, soul, funk and electronic music.

This year Compost have been celebrating their anniversary with a book of praises from musical friends, a three pronged digital compilation and a select number of parties (no bloated 30 date world tour with fashionable names here, this is the real deal). The UK exclusive party sees Rainer Trueby spin at Roots Before Branches in Manchester for a satisfying 4 hours. Ahead of the event, I caught up with Rainer to talk past, present and future…

My Father’s Daughter is the story of my mother’s often-troubled, hard-ass life…and how it informed my living/life/self. It is honest, raw and necessary. It is the story of a true…true survivor.  And the music that Tim Motzer created to accompany my journey…is breathtaking. And the visual images just add another beautiful layer to the already multi-layered story. I know it’s Memorial Day weekend and all…but PLEASE…please come and go on this journey with me…and quite possibly feed your soul/spirit. Those who came to the premiere in February…if u dug it…please leave a glowing testimonial ;) ) May 22 & 23…THE NEW FREEDOM THEATRE. Please spread the word…and come share the experience.” -Ursula Rucker

Rainer Trueby & Corrado Bucci: Truccy – Step By Step EP

Rainer Trueby and Rebirth’s Corrado Bucci joined forces for a splendid Black Label release under the alias TRUCCY. Tastemaker don Gilles Peterson already featured Sidestep in his Worldwide radio show and Jimpster was charting and playing it as well. A truly elegant, smooth deep house 2-tracker.

Corrado Bucci is a young Italian musician, producer and DJ. Since the previous works ‘Brooklyn’ and ‘Chewing Bubble’ (Rebirth Records) the young italian musician and producer has been gaining great support in the electronic scene. He explored new musical territories and started to play real instruments, refining his artistic expression! Best known for his 2014 underground single “Open Your Eyes“ (supported by Gilles Peterson, Rainer Trueby, Lovebirds and Jazzanova to name just a few). In November 2014 Corrado announced that he signed to Local Talk Records & Compost Records ( w/Rainer Trueby under the name “Truccy”) for 2015!

Chaka Kon – Star Time

Kon and The Reflex team up on this 12″ with two neatly contrasting edits of Chaka Khan‘s premiere lady bomb “Every Woman“. Kon plays the lavish extension card, adding extra emphasis on the instrumentation while The Reflex goes for a warmer finish, squaring his focus on the juicy bassline while adding a little cymbal magic to the rhythm. Both authentic and hugely respectful to the original, this is effectively an edit masterclass that we all need to pay attention to.

Kon has done plenty of obscure and rare related releases, but the focus and theme for for this imprint is reworking classics, hence the name “Star Time”. “The Reflex and I put our touch on this anthem, and my mix has been smashing it for the ladies on the floor” -Kon.

Crazy Legs & GZA on the Tonight Show

GZA, Tom Morello & Crazy Legs Perform “The Mexican” With the Roots on “The Tonight Show”

This was a pretty awesome hip-hop moment right here. Growing up a Wu-Tang stan, just the idea of GZA doing a solo performance on late night television in it of itself is amazing, but the genius takes things a step further. GZA is joined by Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello (shredding like no other and dropping in a wild sound effects “solo”, as you’d expect) for this killer performance of their new collabo track, “The Mexican” (with Kara Lane from k.i.d on the hook) on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “The Mexican,” of course, is a cover of the 1972 Babe Ruth track of the same name – one that has gone on to be sampled many times by hip-hop artists. The Roots supply the sounds, GZA brings the bars, and Crazy Legs and ABgirl come through at the end with a brief yet very dope performance to keep things all the way hip-hop – definitely a must watch. GZA’s long awaited new LP, Dark Matter, is coming soon..

10 Artists Pick Their Favorite Prince Records

Article published on The Vinyl Factory March 5, 2015.
http://www.thevinylfactory.com/vinyl-factory-releases/10-artists-pick-their-favourite-prince-records/10/

How many lives has Prince changed? It’s probably impossible to say, but here are a few to start with. From Jill Scott to Seven Davis Jr., we asked ten artists to pick their favourite Prince records and tell us a little bit about why they mean so much to them.

It was about this time last year that Prince had London in a twist. For the inside of a month, he led a campaign to disrupt the sleeping and working patterns of the city, with one secret gig after another drawing serpentine queues outside venues across the city, from Camden’s Electric Ballroom on a dreary February night, to the up market funk-tion at Ronnie Scott’s two weeks later.

This is obviously not the first time that The Purple One has had people in a spin. From humble beginnings recording with 94 East in Minneapolis, Prince Rogers Nelson has been coating his own brand of future funk with a glam rock sheen that has been irresistible ever since. A multi-instrumentalist, sex symbol and musical icon, Prince ruled the ‘80s, sowing the seeds for the obsessive following that would queue for twenty four hours in the rain in London three decades on.

Needless to say, having sold over 100 million records, his influence extends way beyond the world of music, into fashion, art and the cult of celebrity. But for this feature, as with previous ones on Sun Ra, Kraftwerk, Arthur Russell and Bob Marley, we’ve chosen to eschew the bigger picture in favour of the influence Prince has had on specific musicians at specific times of their lives.

With that in mind we asked ten artists to pick their favourite Prince records and tell us a little bit about them, from Dam Funk skipping school to grab a copy of Sign O The Times to Jill Scott’s unadulterated love for Under The Cherry Moon.

And it’s with Jill that we start. Click next to scroll through all ten contributions.

Kon

Kon has been hailed by many as king of re-edits and the best boogie DJ in the world. However, despite being a notoriously dedicated digger, he’s plumped for a straight-up Prince classic.

Resident Advisor: King of Nothing

He’s been described as “the best disco DJ in the world” and is the man behind a string of sought-after edits but, as RA’s Stephen Titmus discovered, Kon is increasingly making moves in the world of house music.

For a man who calls himself the “king of nothing,” Kon’s not short of accolades. Soul Clap describe him as the “best disco DJ in the world.” Gilles Peterson called him the “edit king of 2011.” And BBE has crowned him the “king of digging.” Even Nile Rodgers is a fan. His re-works of classic disco tunes are some of the most inventive around. Kon has access to some of the most sought-after recording sessions of all time—master tapes from the likes of Barry White, Parliament and Gil Scott Heron that allow him to pull apart the musical parts and re-imagine them to his own liking. It’s a position most remixers would kill to be in.

Despite his association with disco, Kon’s purview is much broader than a single genre. He’s been a mainstay of Boston’s hip-hop scene since the early ’90s, and has recently started making waves in the world of house with a release on Soul Clap’s label and an album, On My Way, on BBE that aims to showcase his far-reaching style. I caught up with Kon while he was over in the UK to talk about his early days in Boston, doing favours for Dr. Dre and the benefits of getting bootlegged.

Southport Weekender: Lefto

The histories of BBE Music and the Southport Weekender have intertwined since day one. The first release on the label, Stop & Listen Volume 1, was compiled by Dr Bob Jones, the venerable UK selector who was for many years an integral part of Southport’s core of resident DJs who helped shape the sound of the Weekender scene.

Over the past ten years, the label has continued to release multi-genre compilations, mixed with some killer artist contributions while still finding time to introduce authoritative new collections such as ‘The Kings Of…’ series, always working with veterans and newcomers of the finest stripe. It’s amongst this musical royalty that the history of the label and the longest running indoor dance and urban music event in the world continue to converge: an incredible number of Southport Weekender guest artists have been showcased on the label, Jill Scott, Roy Ayers, Jazzy Jeff, David Rodigan and Kenny Dope amongst them.

With this in mind, we’re most proud to announce a joint venture, building upon this symbiotic relationship with an anticipated run of joint projects from these two groundbreaking brands: real music for real people from the world’s friendliest party!  First up is Lefto whom Fact! Magazine described as “your favourite DJ’s favourite DJ”, affiliated with Brownswood Recordings, Blue Note, !K7 Records, and one of the most significant tastemakers Europe has to offer. This bearded early riser is consistently a couple steps ahead of your average early adopter.

He doesn’t wait for the next thing to land on his lap, he actively seeks it out, just take a peek at his playlists on Belgium’s foremost national radio station Studio Brussels which received compliments from Rough Trade Shops, Gilles Peterson and has featured on MTV Hive. However, don’t assume that he’s only working futuristic angles – no sir. Firmly rooted in jazz and hip-hop, he sharpened his digging sensibility working at the now legendary Music Mania record store in hometown Brussels. His passion for jazz resulted in a remix album for Blue Note. LeFtO is forever moving forwards but always got an ear in the past. Famed for his gloriously eclectic DJ sets, he switches effortlessly between hip hop, funk breaks, neck-snapping beats, future bass, south-American influences, along with wild African rhythms. He’s not only a deejay and producer but also curates his own stage at the Dour Festival and his own nights in the Belgian city of Gent. World renowned, LeFtO regularly blesses sound systems from Tokyo to Seoul, Singapore to Manila, Kazakhstan to Germany, San Francisco and Los Angeles, with residencies in Amsterdam and New York.

Holdin On – Lovebirds feat. Lisa Shaw

Having recently produced a stunning remix of Chasing Kurt’s ‘From The Inside’, German producer and DJ Sebastian Doering – AKA Lovebirds – is back with a new 80s synth driven single on Defected Records. Built around luscious vocals from Canadian songstress Lisa Shaw, ‘Holdin On’ (Lovebirds 808ies Matrix) does exactly as its title suggests: Doering plays director for an orchestra of popping 808 percussive melodies and bright, 80s inspired analogue synth work. Lovebirds’ carefully constructed production prowess and the track’s excellent song writing is sure to be a winning combination for this house cross-over gem.

A Long Hot Summer – Mixed by Julius Papp

Various Artists - A Long Hot Summer | Mixed & Selected by Julius Papp

The Hype
When you think of prolific producers to come out of San Francisco and the Bay Area, names like Miguel Migs, Mark Farina, Jay-J, Fred Everything come to mind. There’s one more that should be added to that list, namely DJ/Producer, Julius Papp. From his very first gig in 1987 to touring with Migs at the famed Salted parties, to countless releases on many labels including King Street and his own NeoDisco imprint, he now returns to us on this fourth installment of A Long Hot Summer. With the first being compiled and mixed by Balaeric producer Kiko Navarro and subsequent yearly comps by Chris Brann (Ananda Project, Wamdue Project, P’Taah) and Brazilian DJ Meme, Julius Papp comes on to seamlessly blend nineteen of the most beautiful tunes in the catalog to create a lush and sensuously rhythmic journey for the long hot days ahead.

Tunes like Frankie Feliciano presents Real Thing, “Stalker Track,” Dennis Ferrer feat. Bola Belo “Dem People Go!” (Kruse & Nuernberg Remix), From P60 with Lisa Shaw “Magic”(Jarred Gallo Remix), Chieko Kinbara feat. Josh Milan “Just Like Love” (Charles Webster Main Remix) and “Higher Love” (Souldynamic Vocal Dub), Kerri Chandler “Hallelujah” (Robosonic Remix), Tuccillo & Kiko Navarro feat. Amor “Lovery” (Yoruba Soul Mix), Ananda Project feat. AK “Heaven Is Right Here” (Danny Krivit & Dazzle Drums Mix) and his own cuts, “Groove Asylum,” “Round In My Mind,” “Your Life 2013” and others will help get your summer groove on. As quoted in Resident Advisor Julius states, “When I DJ, I like to go on a ride. I don’t like to stay in one groove for too long. I like to be eclectic in my musical selection, incorporating various styles.” With this eclectic culmination in mind, he developed a smoother edge, a deep soulful style of House that continues to define the San Francisco sound.”…and he does that oh so well on this stunning new comp.

Tortured Soul: Undercover Remixes – Mixed by Jask

Tortured Soul’s ‘Undercover Remixes’ fires up overlooked mixes, hidden gems, and new tracks.

Leading up to their highly anticipated new studio album, the deep house trio Tortured Soul is dropping their latest compilation on the ears of dance music lovers, Undercover Remixes. The high-energy thirteen-track collection, dressed up with a groovy yield-like yellow cover with the TS boys in A-Team mode, highlights previously-released 12-inch friendly mixes of some of the group’s most treasured hits and deep cuts, handled meticulously by A-list mixers (DJ Spinna, Dimitri from Paris, Quentin Harris, Eric Kupper).

Never a stranger to the element of surprise, Tortured Soul has dropped a host of mentionable offerings to the playlist, including brand new tracks. The freshly baked “I Know What’s On Your Mind,” superbly mixed by TS’ very own Ethan White, sounds like a sneak peak of new material to come, while the newly-crafted disco-powered remake of “I Might Do Something Wrong” features a dazzling vocal performance from Brand New Heavies singer N’Dea Davenport. Hard-to-find tracks like Eric Kupper’s 2004 12” club mix of “Fall in Love” and the highly sought-out Yoruba Main Mix by Osunlade of “I Might Do Something Wrong” are also part of the equation.

Tampa-based DJ/producer Jask has taken on the painstaking assignment of helming together an incredible hour-plus long marathon of Undercover Remixes for a DJ mix set. On July 23rd, 2013, the set of individual mixes and the Jask-powered Continuous DJ Mix will be released on TSTC Records and made available across most platforms of digital media stores worldwide, including iTunes, Amazon and Traxsource.

Lefto & Kutmah – Symbiosis Mix CD + T-shirt (101 Apparel)

Lefto: As one the most important tastemakers Europe has to offer, and affiliated with Brownswood Recordings, Blue Note, !K7 Records, Jazzy Sport in Japan and Do-Over parties, this bearded early riser is consistently a couple steps ahead of your average early adopter. He doesn’t wait for the next thing to land on his lap, he actively seeks it out, therefore just take a peek at his playlists on Belgium’s foremost national radio station Studio Brussel which received compliments from Rough Trade Shops, Gilles Peterson and featured on MTV Hive. However, don’t assume that he’s only working futuristic angles – no sir. Firmly rooted in jazz and hip hop, he sharpened his digging sensibility working at the now legendary Music Mania record store in hometown Brussels. His passion for jazz resulted in a remix album for Blue Note which was well received by the community. LeFtO is forever moving forwards but always got an ear in the past. Famed for his gloriously eclectic dj sets, he switches effortlessly between hip hop, funk breaks, neck-snapping beats, future bass, south-american influences, bruk riddims and some wild african rhythms. In his country, which voted him 5th best DJ of all-time, he’s not only a deejay and producer but also curates his own stage at the Dour Festival and his successful awarded nights in Gent, Belgium. World renowned, LeFtO regularly blesses sound systems around the globe. The travel resulted in a compilation on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings with partner in crime DJ Simbad and another one for Universal.

DJ MFR feat. Morrisson – More

Transport Recordings’ very own DJ MFR presents “More,” his new collaboration with singer Morrisson, a seasoned San Francisco vocalist who has collaborated on many Transport singles over the years. The original evokes an early ’90s classic house style with an M1 organ, a dance floor ready bass riff, shuffling hats, and nice rhythmic key stabs – but it’s the buoyant accompanying bass notes and soulful vocals that really set the track apart. Next up, Mozak’s Dub Mix marks the production debut of San Francisco newcomer Mozak. The vocals are teased out, the bass goes under, keys come to the melodic forefront, and springy synth notes bounce into play. For DJs seeking a sparser treatment, the single includes also two instrumental mixes.

Luv N’ Haight Edit Series Vol. 7 feat. Kon

Volume 7 of Ubiquity’s ongoing Luv N’ Haight Edit Series is our first on a 7 inch and features heavyweight digger, edit-master and producer Kon with his take on Twilight’s Modern Soul and Boogie classic “You’re In Love”.  He stays true to the original but packs a bit more punch into the groove while keeping the focus on the catchy vocals and chorus on the A-side, and doing it Dub-style with minimal vocals and plenty of echo on the flip.

2013 was definitely the year of Kon with a remix released in March via On The Prowl’s Party Mix Vol.7, his “All About You” EP dropping in May on Soul Clap’s newly formed record label and his first solo all-original album “On My Way” released on BBE this past July. In between studio-work, touring in promotion of his new releases and djing parties as one of the world’s most highly sought-after DJ’s, Kon couldn’t pass up the opportunity to add his name to our growing list of venerated producers that have blessed the Luv N’Haight Edit Series with their work. Supplied with the original stems culled from master tapes provided by Twilight’s own Lawrence Ross, Kon takes full-advantage and crafts a classic remix and dub version of the song guaranteed to get any dancefloor jumping.

Available February 11, 2014 in a limited, custom splatter-vinyl 7in!

01. You’re In Love (Kon Remix)

Kon – On My Way (July 2013, BBE)

What leads an individual to walk the often obsessive path of the crate digger? Raiding filthy basements and accumulating back-breaking stacks of wax on a tantalising search for the unearthed groove, Kon cites early exposure as the source of his calling: “One of the first physical records I fell in love with was Electric Light Orchestra’s El Dorado. The music on that LP is incredible, climatic strings, and full of amazing songwriting. To digest and absorb music with such depth is the best thing for a 4 year old. Get ‘em going young! I know this is part of the reason why later in life I searched further than what was just on the radio.” Kon’s father was a drummer, and his love of the break not only inspired the quest for the funkiest rarities that birthed the iconic On Track and Off Track compilations, but also informed his approach to the edit. Check the ‘Nite Time Remix’ of ‘Hooked’ as the perfect introduction to his style: breaking things down to the bare essentials, the rhythm section takes on a life of its own in what has fast become the definitive version of an already classic disco workout. Kon’s output has given new life to this art form, and on the road to mastery he studied the golden touch of editing and remix masters Walter Gibbons and BBE label-mate John Morales. Read more →
